How Can Bacterial Vaginosis Be Diagnosed
The vaginal condition, bacterial vaginosis, is not harmful or painful, but it certainly is disturbing as it produces a lot of weird looking white discharge that has a repulsive fishy odor. If you suspect this condition then you should get it diagnosed as soon as possible so that it does not develop into something serious.
When you go for diagnosis, a sample from the inside of the vagina will be taken on a swab which will be tested. If there is a presence of bacterial Vaginosis then the sample will reveal the following things:
- A fishy odor which will be revealed when potassium hydroxide will be added to a small amount of this sample on slide.
- A pH that is higher than 4.5 will be revealed upon testing the sample on litmus paper because the environments of the vagina are generally acidic to prevent bacterial growth.
The presence of clue cells, which is revealed when the discharge is tested by a drop of sodium chloride.
